Ranu Kumbolo (in Indonesian: Lake
Kumbolo) is a lake located at the foot of Mount Semeru exactly in Lumajang
Regency, East Java. Ranu Kumbolo is also included in the area of Bromo Tengger
Semeru National Park. Ranu Kumbolo is part of easiest route from Ranu Pane to
Mount Semeru peak. The lake edge is used as resting place and make camp for
Gunung Semeru climbers. The best time to visit between April-June.
SEASONS
In April to June, usually plants, such
as grass and trees flourish. At that time, rain still occurred occasionally but
didn’t interfere visiting activities. The rain actually makes the grass
affected by dust washed away by water. The dry season will occur from July to
August. The weather is relatively hot and the wind feels dry. The grass and
trees around the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, are usually molested.
Meanwhile, in the middle of October it will experience the rainy season or
start an increase in rainfall. At that time, the area of Mount
Bromo savanna and Mount Semeru trekking will become muddy.
The lake has an area of about 15
hectares and located at an altitude of 2,400 meters above sea level, the air
temperature at Ranu Kumbolo can reach -5 degree Celsius at night. So if you’re
into Ranu Kumbolo, be sure to bring jacket if you don’t want to get cold. In
the morning, the temperature in Ranu Kumbolo can reach up to -20 degree Celsius,
you can enjoy the sunrise which appear from between two hills and see the
expanse of flowers edelweiss here. Even though the Ranu Kumbolo lake water looks
very clean, all travelers are prohibited to swim here.
HOW TO GET THERE?
To be able to get to Ranu Kumbolo, you
must first come to Ranu Pane village, a small village that becomes the
departure point of climbing Ranu Kumbolo and Mount Semeru. You can go to Ranu
Pane village through two lanes, namely Malang Regency and Lumajang Regency. The
trek from Ranu Pane to Ranu Kumbolo usually takes 5 to 6 hours. Bring your
camera and find best spot to take picture.
